Kathmandu Pub Crawl Itinerary: 5 Stops in One Night

Kathmandu Pub Crawl Itinerary

Introduction to Kathmandu Pub Crawl Itinerary

The best nights in Thamel never feel planned. You start with a drink at sunset, someone says “just one more,” the music changes, and three hours later you’re somewhere you didn’t expect with people you didn’t know that morning.

But there’s a difference between a night that drifts and a night that falls apart. Without a route, groups end up at a crowded venue at the wrong hour, arrive at a bar that’s quiet, or burn their energy at the first stop and fade before the music gets good. A simple plan changes that.

This Kathmandu pub crawl itinerary is built around five stops in one compact district, in an order that makes sense: calm first, louder later, with a dinner break in the middle and a big-room finish. It’s written for friends, couples, solo travellers and visitors who don’t want to spend the evening staring at a map.

One honest note. This is a suggested route based on what Thamel’s venues are widely known for, not an organised tour, and hours, menus and prices change. Always check before you go.

Times are a guide. Adjust to the sunset, the live-music schedule and your group’s energy.

Before You Start: Ground Rules

A pub crawl works when you set a few rules before the first drink.

1. Treat “stops” as places, not drinks. You don’t need to finish a drink at every stop. One drink, one cocktail or even just water counts. Five stops is a route, not a target.

2. Eat properly. The route includes a dinner break for a reason. Start with a light snack at stop one, and have a real meal before the loud part of the night.

3. Carry original ID. Club Nova enforces a strict 18+ policy with original photo ID: citizenship, passport or driving licence. Other venues may check too. A photocopy or phone photo isn’t a safe bet.

4. Set a budget. Agree on a limit before you start. Ask the price of cocktails before you order, and ask whether live-music venues charge a cover.

5. Fix your meeting point and your ride home. Pick a landmark if someone gets separated, and plan how everyone gets back.

6. Know the hours. Closing times are tiered. A December 2022 decision by the Kathmandu District Security Committee, reported by OnlineKhabar, set restaurants at midnight, lounges and bars at 2 AM, and clubs and discos at 4 AM. Individual venues operate under their own arrangements, so confirm hours. For more, see our guide on how late clubs stay open in Kathmandu.

Why This Order Works

The route follows a simple rule: calm to loud, light to heavy.

  • Sunset first, because rooftop views are best before dark.

  • Relaxed second, so the group can talk and settle.

  • Dinner in the middle, so nobody is hungry when the music gets loud.

  • Live music before the club, to build energy without a big-room commitment.

  • A breather before the finale, so you arrive at the club with energy left.

  • The club last, because it opens at 9 PM, fills after 11 PM and runs late.

Thamel is compact and walkable, so the legs between stops are short. Check each hop on a map before you go, and take a taxi if anyone is tired.

Party Guide

Stop 1: Fat Monk’s Rooftop Bar (around 5:00 PM)

The vibe: a rooftop with views opening over Thamel Chowk, widely described as having one of the strongest cocktail programmes in the area. It’s a good place to start because the view is best before dark, and the first drink sets the mood.

What to do:

  • Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sunset to get a seat.

  • Order one cocktail, and take your time.

  • Take your group photo here, while the light is good.

Tip: rooftops fill up on weekends, so reserve if you can. For how sunset times shift through the year and how to choose a rooftop, see our guide to Kathmandu rooftop bars.

Stop 2: Sam’s Bar (around 6:30 PM)

The vibe: one of the longest-running spots in Thamel, a small rooftop with a laid-back, unpretentious crowd. It’s popular with locals and backpackers, and it’s a place where conversation comes easily. Listings place it on Chaksibari Marg, the same street as Club Nova.

What to do:

  • Order a simple drink and settle in.

  • Meet other travellers, or catch up with your group.

  • Don’t expect a full kitchen. The venue is described as a bar, not a restaurant.

Tip: this is your slow stop. If you want to save energy for later, make it a one-drink stop.

Dinner Break (around 7:45 PM)

Choose any Thamel restaurant that suits your group, and book ahead on weekends. Restaurants generally wind down around midnight, so eat at a sensible hour. Drink water, and make it a proper meal.

This break is what makes the rest of the night work. Skipping it is the most common reason crawls fall apart by stop four.

Stop 3: Purple Haze Rock Bar (around 9:00 PM)

The vibe: Kathmandu’s best-known live rock venue, on Paryatan Marg. It’s a large, two-storey space with a stage, founded in the early 2010s, with local rock bands playing covers and original songs in Nepali and English, usually from the evening onwards. It’s known as a sociable place, including for solo visitors.

What to do:

  • Get there by 9 PM for a good spot near the stage.

  • Ask whether there’s a cover charge before you enter.

  • Stay for a few songs, then move on. You don’t need the whole set.

Tip: Fridays are described as especially busy. Live-music schedules change, so check who’s playing. For other live venues, see our guide to live music in Thamel.

Stop 4: Bimba (around 10:15 PM)

The vibe: a cosy, plant-filled rooftop, often described as laid-back with frequent live acoustic sets. After a loud rock set, it’s the breather your ears and legs will appreciate.

What to do:

  • Order water or a light drink, and sit for 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Check everyone’s energy, plan your ride home and decide who’s going on to the club.

  • Share a snack if the menu has one.

Tip: if Bimba is full or closed, Reggae Bar is often described as a chill, easy-going alternative, though hours vary.

Stop 5: Club Nova (from around 11:00 PM)

The vibe: the finale. Club Nova is the biggest nightclub in Nepal, on Chaksibari Marg in Thamel-16, with space for up to 2,500 guests across four levels of curved decks, a hydraulic ceiling light system, an international-standard sound system and a stage that has hosted national and international artists.

The music: the sound leans heavily toward hip-hop and EDM, with house and commercial chart music mixed by resident DJs.

The timing: the venue lists its hours as 9 PM to 5 AM daily. The floor tends to fill after 11 PM and peak past midnight, so arriving around 11 PM means you walk in just as the energy builds. Confirm hours with the team.

The door:

  • Age and ID: strictly 18+, with original photo ID.

  • Dress code: smart, party-ready attire, with no slippers, flip-flops or sportswear. Our guide on what to wear to a nightclub in Kathmandu has ideas.

  • Entry cost: varies by night. Check the venue’s official channels.

For groups: if you’re a bigger crawl, a VIP table gives you a reserved base, bottle service and a place to sit when your legs have had enough. Club Nova offers three tiers (Elite, Privilege and Diamond) on a minimum-spend basis, plus private decks. There’s no published price list, so ask for a quote. Our guide on how to book a VIP table at Club Nova explains how.

Getting there: open it in Google Maps. There’s basement parking, but space is limited on busy nights and Thamel’s streets are narrow, so you’ll likely arrive on foot or by taxi.

Costs and Staying in Control

Prices change, so here’s how to manage spending rather than quoting numbers.

  • Set a total budget per person before you start.

  • Ask for prices before you order cocktails or bottles.

  • Check for cover charges at live-music venues and clubs.

  • Pay as you go, or agree a system for splitting bills.

  • Don’t buy rounds for everyone unless you’ve agreed to.

  • Remember the extras: dinner, rides and any table minimum.

For a general sense of how nightlife spending works in the city, see our guide to how much a night out costs in Kathmandu.

Safety, Rules and Getting Home

The basics:

  • Age. The legal age to buy and drink alcohol in Nepal is 18. Our guide to Nepal alcohol laws explains the details, including election-period bans.

  • Don’t drink in the street. Drinking in public places is prohibited, so finish drinks inside venues and don’t carry open drinks between stops.

  • Keep your drink in sight, and don’t accept drinks from strangers.

  • Stay together, and use a group chat with a shared location if you’re a large group.

  • Pace yourself. Alternate with water.

Getting home:

  • Never drive after drinking. Kathmandu traffic police apply a zero-tolerance approach, and special checks are common around busy periods, as Ekantipur reported in October 2026.

  • Pre-book a taxi or ride app, or share a ride with friends.

  • Don’t walk home alone late at night.

Solo, Small Groups, Big Groups and Non-Drinkers

Solo. Start at the rooftops, where conversation is easiest, and tell someone where you are. Live-music venues are good for meeting people.

Couples and small groups. Stick to the route as written, and share a table at the club if you want a base.

Big groups. Book ahead where you can, and nominate one organiser. Consider reserving a table at the finale.

Non-drinkers. The route works without alcohol. Club Nova’s bar menu includes mocktails, and most venues serve soft drinks and tea.
